In the world of search engine optimisation the process of link building is seen as one of the most important activities in the advancement of search engine rankings. In the early days of search engine optimisation link building was a somewhat simple and indiscriminate affair. In recent years this opinion has changed. Those in the search engine optimisation industry are beginning to realise that link building is becoming less about quality, and more about quality. This change in emphasis is across the board in terms of linking although it has had specific developments in terms of content based link building.

Authoritative Backlinks

SEO practitioners have had to negate the effects of automated distribution services. Essentially the worth of these services has been devalued by the fact they use similar if not identical distribution lists for the submitted articles and blogs. Search engines see many of the sites contained on the distribution lists as worthless and hence do not regard the links as authoritative. Subsequently SEOs are now better served by sourcing respectable websites which accept content based links as these sites are more likely to provide quality, authoritative backlinks.

Another development in the area of content based linking is that as many automated distribution services rely upon one article or blog reproduced numerous times, search engine duplication filters are further devaluing backlinks from duplicate information. Subsequently an emphasis on unique written information is now evident.

These two developments do not represent changes in content based link building in its entirety but give an idea of how a qualitative approach has replaced quantitative strategies.
